롤스로이스가 아주 특별한 맞춤형 럭셔리카를 생산하기 위해 전담 ‘코치빌드’ 부서를 설립할 것이라고 밝혔다. 코치빌드 모델은 처음부터 끝까지 완전 주문 제작 방식으로 만들어진 차를 뜻한다. 롤스로이스는 이번 소식을 전하며 “자동차의 거의 모든 면을 개인 맞춤화할 수 있는 능력은 고객들이 우리를 찾아오는 주된 이유 중 하나다”라며, “기존 제약 조건을 뛰어넘어 고객에게 전할 수 있는 무한한 가능성을 모색하고자 우리는 정식으로 코치빌드 부서를 다시 설립하기로 결정했다.”라고 설명했다.
롤스로이스 코치빌드 모델 주문 시, 섀시를 제외한 차의 대부분은 수작업을 통해 새로 만들어진다. 참고로 지난 2017년 공개된 코치빌드 모델 ‘스웹테일’은 ‘2인승 쿠페 디자인에 대형 파노라마 유리 루프를 더한 차’라는 주문을 통해 제작됐는데, 실제로 요트를 연상케 하는 루프라인은 그 어떤 롤스로이스 모델에서도 볼 수 없었던 것이다. 당시 롤스로이스는 해당 차에 대해 “정확한 가격은 공개할 수 없지만 역대 신차 출시가 중 최고가 일 것이다.”라고 밝혔으며, 예상 추정 가격은 1천3백만 달러, 한화 약 1백45억 원으로 알려졌다.
이번 소식으로 향후 어떠한 모습의 롤스로이스 모델들이 탄생할지에 대한 많은 이들의 관심이 모이고 있다.
Rolls-Royce said it would set up a dedicated "CoachBuild" department to produce a very special customized luxury car. The coach-build model refers to a car made in a completely custom-made manner from beginning to end. "The ability to personalize almost every aspect of the car is one of the main reasons why customers come to us," Rolls-Royce said. "We decided to re-establish our CoachBuild department to explore the infinite possibilities of delivering to customers beyond existing constraints."
When ordering Rolls-Royce Coach Build models, most of the cars are handmade except for the chassis. For reference, the coach-build model "Swebtail," which was unveiled in 2017, was produced through an order called "A car with a two-seater coupe design plus a large panoramic glass loop," which was not seen in any Rolls-Royce model. At the time, Rolls-Royce said, "We cannot disclose the exact price, but it will be the highest ever launch of a new car," and the estimated price was reported to be $13 million, about KRW 14.5 billion.
The news is drawing keen attention to what Rolls-Royce models will look like in the future.
